Aryaloka Buddhist Center is part of the Triratna Buddhist Community, an international Buddhist network of public centers, communities, ethical businesses and social projects. When it was founded, in England, in 1967, by the Venerable Sangharakshita it was known as the Friends of the Western Buddhist Order.
Sangharakshita lived in India for twenty years, where he studied and practiced with Theravada, Mahayana and Vajrayana teachers. Upon returning to the West he founded a movement dedicated to communicating the entire Buddhist tradition in a context that was helpful and appropriate for the modern Western world. The Triratna Buddhist Community system of practice emphasizes samatha and vipassana meditation, friendship and sangha, creativity and the arts, and study and ritual.
