Buddha Day Celebration

BuddhaJoin us for an evening with the Buddha! We'll have a visual feast, looking at representations of the Buddha in different times and cultures, accompanied by stories from Shakyamuni's life. Following a short meditation we'll experience Buddhannusati, or recollection of the Buddha. We'll close the evening with devotion - verses and chanting in honor of the Buddhas of all the worlds. If you wish, bring a candle or flower to offer our honored guest, the Buddha.

Open to everyone, no prior experience necessary.

In the "Keeping it Real: Practicing the Dharma off the Cushion" workshop series we will investigate how our everyday lives can express our Dharma practice. Each workshop will focus on a specific topic, and provide tools and guidance for navigating the trickier areas of our lives. Living Compassion: Order/Mitra Retreat

livingcompassion_smThis retreat is an excellent chance for Order members and mitras to spend some extended time with each other on retreat and discuss practicing compassion.  The weekend will be led by visiting Order member Shantigarbha, an expert in Non-Violent Communication and the leader of several events on this topic at Aryaloka in past years. The focus of the retreat will be, "How do we really live compassion in our lives?" and will include the following elements:

•    Meditation sessions including guided reflections and open sits.
•    Exercises drawn from Nonviolent Communication (NVC) to bring empathy and compassion into our everyday lives and relationships.
•    Stories from the life of the Buddha: How did he embody empathy? How did he make empathy the basis of ethics and compassion?
•    How do we develop empathy for those we love and extend it even to our enemies?

Practice EveningJoin us every Friday evening for a session of collective practice, including meditation, chanting, and a special puja on the Fridays closest to the full moon. Most evenings are from 7:00 p.m. to 8:15 p.m..  Evenings that include a full moon puja are from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Each evening includes a combination of meditation (either the Mindfulness of Breathing or Metta Bhavana practices) with some minimal explanation for any newcomers, a short reading, and some chanting, followed by a short relaxing period of tea.

Everyone who is familiar with the Mindfulness of Breathing and Metta Bhavana meditation practices are welcome to attend.

Advanced Meditation CourseOn this six-week course we'll explore insight meditation though an experiential investigation of the Three Lakshanas ("marks") of impermanence, non-self, and unsatisfactoriness. Contemplation of the Three Lakshanas loosens our fixed sense of reality and opens us up to a more fluid sense of ourselves and the world around us.  Prior experience with Mindfulness of Breathing and Metta Bhavana practices are an important foundation for taking this course.
