 General info on events

Every Tuesday night is Sangha Night at Aryaloka. It's when we gather to meditate and explore aspects of Buddhism through workshops, talks, study, ritual, or discussion. The emphasis is on practical applications of Buddhist principles to our own lives.

Newcomers are welcome! Please note, however, that the 40 minute silent meditation is typically not guided and no meditation instruction is given. Some people prefer to have prior instruction; others are happy to join in and learn as they go. (See Programs for more information on introductory classes.)

What happens on Sangha Night?

Typically, our Tuesday night activities are:

  • 7:00 - Tea and Announcements
  • 7:20 - Meditation and shrine room activity
  • 8:20 - Study, discussion, or talk on evening's topic
  • 9:15 - End

With all of the actitivies, you are free to participate or to just sit and listen. Nothing is compulsory. If you have any questions, please ask!

Full Moon Pujas

Most months, on the Tuesday closest to the full moon, we celebrate a Full Moon Puja in place of meditation at 7:20.

"The Life of the Buddha" with Amala

AmalaJan-Feb 2008

8-10 weeks exploring the significance of the life of Siddhartha Gautama, who became the 'historical' Buddha in 542 BCE.

We will look at the main events and phases of his life - childhood and youth, the 'going forth', period of spiritual quest, Enlightenment, years of teaching the Dhamma - and explore whether there are parallels in our own spiritual pursuits. What can we learn from the Buddha's life story about commitment and motivation, about practice, conditioning, and transcendence? How can we appreciate the cosmic significance of his achievement? Can we truly take up the path opened to us by the Buddha when he meditated under the Bodhi tree and saw the true nature of all things?

Participants are encouraged to read on the life of the Buddha in a variety of texts. Sangharaksita's book 'Who is the Buddha?' will provide a framework and context for our discussions. Other books and accounts of the life of the Buddha are welcome.
