 General info on events

Featuring musicians Mark Latham (Sravaniya), violin; Beth Welty, violin; Noralee Walker, viola; and Sandi-Jo Malmon, cello.

We will play works by Haydn, Shostakovich and Mendelssohn, including the amazing 8th quartet of Dimitri Shostakovich. It's an "autobiographical" work, dedicated to 'the victims of fascism and war', and was written by the composer in three days during a visit to Dresden in 1960, still destroyed by the destruction by firebombing fifteen years earlier. A profoundly moving work.

5:45pm pre-concert talk

Sravaniya will give a half hour presentation on Shostakovich and the 8th quartet, including slides/video etc. Not to be missed!

6:30pm concert

The program is as follows:

Haydn: Opus 20 no 2 in C major. a lovely, sparkling, sometimes even operatic piece from the "father of the string quartet."

Shostakovich: Quartet no 8. "To the victims of fascism and war." (1960) An incredibly moving and immediately accessible work from the greatest Soviet composer.

Intermission

Mendelssohn: Quartet in E Flat Major, op 12. Full of beauty, youthfulness and joy, this delightful quartet proves that Mendelssohn was indeed as much of a prodigy as Mozart.
