Event Dates: March 15, 10 – 4

“Then I saw an arrow here, Hard to see, embedded in the heart. Pierced by this arrow, People dash about in all directions. When the arrow’s pulled out, They don’t run and they don’t sink.”

This is from “The Discourse on Being Violent”, which scholars believe to be one of the oldest and earliest of the historical Buddha’s discourses. It’s drawn from a recent translation of the Atthakavagga, (The Book of Eights), one of the earliest writings in the Pali Canon.

We’ll spend the day together reading and talking about the historical Buddha as he lived and taught in his lifetime. We’ll use this particular discourse but also other source material to experience the Buddha and his teachings before they became written and formalized. It captures a different glimpse into the life of Siddhartha Gautama; a look at what and how he taught before the Four Noble Truths, the Eightfold path, and other aspects of what later came to be the organized traditions of “Buddhism”. A vegetarian lunch is included in the cost.

Mid-Level prices are for those who have a regular income and are paying their mortgage or rent. Prices at this level contribute to the range of Aryaloka’s operating costs. The Base-Level price is for those without an income or with an income low enough that making ends meet is a challenge. Those whose circumstances are not included above can call the office to arrange alternate pricing.
